  1. 1833-1897. German composer, pianist, and
  2. conductor. Considered one of the greatest
  3. composers of symphonic music and of songs,
  4. his works include four symphonies;
  5. lieder(songs); concertos for piano and for
  6. violin; chamber music; sonatas; and the
  7. choral A German Requiem 1868. He performed
  8. and conducted his own works. In 1853 the
  9. violinist Joachim introduced him to Liszt and
  10. Schumann. From 1868 Brahms made his home in
  11. Vienna. Although his music has romantic
  12. qualities, it is essentially a sophistication
  13. of the classical tradition from the point to
  14. which Beethoven had brought it.
